Big Rapids Parks, Rec heats up winter with activities


BIG RAPIDS — Baby, it’s cold outside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get some exercise. The Big Rapids Parks and Recreation will soon start its winter session of activities. Here’s what you need to know.

Pickleball: Whether you’re a pro or amateur, an early riser or after work warrior, there’s a pickleball session for you. Meet and play other pickleball players 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays and 8-10 a.m. Fridays through May 6 at the Ferris State Racquet Center, 14342 Northland Dr, Big Rapids. Players must wear tennis shoes, but you don’t need to have a paddle. Cost is $5 per person.

Walking Program: No matter what the weather, it’s always warm and dry at Big Rapids Middle School. The school, at 500 N. Warren in Big Rapids, has opened its hallways to walkers from 4-8 p.m. Monday through Thursdays until April 28. Register by calling 231-592-4000 or stopping by Big Rapids City Hall, 226 N. Michigan Ave., Big Rapids. Maps of the facility with distances marked are available at city hall.

Groove: Jump, jive and groove to all styles of music. You don’t need experience or memorize fancy choreography to keep in shape. Wear comfy shoes and bring a water bottle and total/yoga mat. Classes are 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 4-June 2, at Big Rapids Middle School cafeteria, 500 N. Warren in Big Rapids. Cost is $2 per person. No class March 29.

Latin Fusion Dance Fitness: Put on your dancing shoes for this fun cardiovascular workout. Latin and international music plus easy-to-follow choreography equals improved flexibility, strength, balance and endurance. All levels welcome. Sessions are 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 6-June 4, at Big Rapids Middle School cafeteria, 500 N. Warren in Big Rapids. Cost is $2 per person. No class March 29.

Co-Ed Volleyball League: Miss organized sports? Join other volleyball players for this 10-week season. Scrimmage is Jan. 9, and league games begin Jan. 16. Games run weekly from 1-9 p.m. Sundays at Crossroads Charter Academy’s gym, 215 N State St, Big Rapids. Cost is $300 per team, and registration forms are due by Jan. 3. Senior Fit Time: Designed for just older youths, this class offers a low impact routine combining cardio, balance and muscle stretching. Bring a mat, water bottle and personal weights. Classes are 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays and 3-4 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 16-April 28, Style Station, 1619 Catherine St., Big Rapids. Cost is $2 per person.
