On the nutrition front, toor dal is rich in iron, calcium, folate, and proteins – in a 100 grams serving, toor dal gives 22 grams of proteins. It is specifically beneficial for heart patients, pregnant women, and diabetes patients.
  3. Urad dal (black beans): Urad dal or black lentils often enjoyed as dal makhani is one of the most delicious preparations in North India. It is also a rich source of proteins – as much as 12 grams of protein in half a cup – along with potassium, magnesium, calcium, and B-vitamins. Regular intake of this variety is linked to stronger bones and nervous systems, better digestion, and heart health.
  4. Chana dal: Chana dal is another variety that does not plunge a hole in your pocket and at the same time comes with a plethora of health benefits. Rich in iron, calcium, potassium, fibre, and most importantly proteins, this one is extremely beneficial for diabetes and heart disease patients. Hypertension patients can also benefit from chana dal as it offers 9 grams of proteins in a half-cup serving.
