Senior dome softball league is back for the season

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – After a two-month delay, the RCTC sports bubble is up and running, and while high school and college athletes use the facility, athletes of all ages can practice under the dome.

The Rochester senior dome softball league held its first practice Wednesday at The Bubble.

“‘Very excited about it. We’ve been waiting since mid-November for the dome to get put up,” senior dome softball league coordinator Jim Goodman said.

The Bubble is used by a number of teams in the area. It’s open for reservations from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until the second or third week of April.

“We waited a long time for this. It’s a chance to see everyone again because we don’t see each other, and we miss that social part of it,” senior dome softball league pitcher Deb Warnek said.

The senior softball team consists of men 50-years-old and up and women 40 and up.

“When I came out, there were only four women that played, and I was accepted. When they found out I actually could play ball, that was even better. They welcome people with all abilities. If you don’t play really well or haven’t played for a long time, it’s okay. We’ll figure it out,” Warnek said.

“Our motto for the league is fun, fitness and fellowship,” Goodman said.

The team’s oldest member, Glen Berry, is 85-years-old. He says he still has a ways to go.

“I’m the oldest one here. I’m not a very good player. It’s fun. The guys and ladies treat me good, so I have a good time,” Berry said.

Whether they’re playing hardball Wednesday nights on their draft team or more relaxed games on Mondays with their rec team, they are just happy to be together again.

“To get out, to move, to see that we still can do this after we’ve been out for so long, it’s just such a wonderful opportunity to get out and do stuff and to see all these guys and be part of this group again,” Warnek said.
