Stoke City injury news as six senior players set for under-23s game today

Stoke City are waiting on an update on Romaine Sawyers after the midfielder limped out of the win at Queens Park Rangers.

Stoke are slowly knocking down a long injury list – with Sam Clucas reappearing yesterday and six senior players building up fitness in today’s under-23s game against Southampton (4pm) – but Sawyers and Tyrese Campbell are both being monitored after needing to be taken off at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

There are hopes that Tyrese Campbell was only suffering fatigue in his calves but Sawyers, who was taken off after treatment in the 56th minute, is a bigger concern ahead of next weekend’s home game against MIddlesbrough.

“We’re a little bit concerned about Romaine, who came off. Tye is, I think, more fatigued than anything else,” said Michael O’Neill.

“It’s good to have Clucas back. He gives us energy and I think he showed that straight away and he gave us quality and that’s a big plus for us.”

Abdallah Sima, Alfie Doughty, Tashan Oakley-Boothe, Demeaco Duhaney, Sam Surridge – who is back from suspension next weekend, and Leo Ostigard are set to feature for the under-23s this afternoon.

“They need the minutes because they will be called upon,” said O’Neill.

“As a player I remember it was always difficult coming into a game cold. You want those minutes to give you confidence, give you fitness otherwise they would only be training in a small group anyway.”
