A 25-year-old mum from Tamworth has revealed the surprising discovery she made during her impressive transformation.

Welcome to You Got This, news.com.au’s weekly slice of fitness inspiration featuring tips and advice from real women who’ve experienced it all.

A mother-of-three has revealed how she managed to drop an impressive 33kg after smashing her goals in the four years since she’s had kids.

Shan Butcher, 25, had just given birth to her first child in 2017 when she became fed up with how she was feeling.

The Tamworth mum revealed she wasn’t happy with the choices she was making that saw her “gain a lot of weight” making her feel constantly rundown.

“I just didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin anymore,” Shan told news.com.au

“I would reach for takeaway foods and things like chocolate and soft drinks. I had no education when it came to food and just ate whatever.”

Shan said the over-processed foods she was consuming began to have a negative impact on body, often making her feel lethargic and lacking in motivation.

“I had no self love, I didn’t feel confident and I had no energy to do anything,” she said.

It was during this time the now mother-of-three decided to sign up to The Healthy Mummy, an online weight loss program.

“I woke up one day thinking, ‘this is enough, I need to change’ because what I was doing wasn’t healthy.”

To her surprise, Shan then went on to lose an impressive 17kg in seven months purely by adjusting her eating habits.

When she fell pregnant with her second child two years later, she gained 14kg, but went on to lose another 21kg in just nine months.

Determined to stick to her new lifestyle, Shan did the same after having her third child in 2019.

“I had put on 20kg during that pregnancy, but I started the journey again losing 29.5kg in 13 months which is the lightest I have ever been in my life.”

Shan’s transformation came down to tweaking her nutrition and was “shocked” to discover exercise didn’t play a huge role.

“When I first started I was having two Healthy Mummy shakes for breakfast, high in protein foods for lunch and dinner and two snacks throughout the day,” she explained.

“It was all nutrition. I was shocked at that because I thought it was only down to exercise, but most of it came down to nutrition for me.”

Shan said she only started to incorporate training into her routine nine months ago.

“I have done zero exercise until more recently. It got to a point where I was happy with my size and now I am focusing on toning and building muscle and definition.”

The mum trains weights six times a week, taking her kids, now 5, 3 and 1, with her to the local gym where they have a secured play area.

She also aims to walk 10,000 steps a day, and said the “secret” is in “being organised”.

“Meal prepping makes things so much easier when you have kids. That’s what I was lacking before my journey,” Shan said. “For me, I would feed the kids and when there was nothing to eat, I would just pick at their food.

“I feel I have to be organised otherwise I wouldn’t be able to keep up – it’s harder when you’re not prepped.”

Shan said revamping her lifestyle choices has given her a new lease on life.

“It has changed my life so much. It’s not a diet anymore it my lifestyle. I love my new life,” she said. “I’m so much fitter and have so much more energy.

“I have never ever been so confident in my body. My mental health hasn’t ever been this good either.”

For fellow mums also looking to make a change, Shan said to “prioritise yourself”.

“Not in a selfish way, but you need to look after yourself too,” she said.

“If you fall off the bandwagon don’t put it down to a bad week or month – just try again the next day.”
