West Haven seniors worry they’re being left behind

WEST HAVEN — The city may be getting older, but seniors say they’re still living.

“Today’s senior is much more energetic and functional for many more years,” said Regina Jensen.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the percent of city residents over 55 years old grew by 2 points over the last decade. According to the 2010 Census, 24.9 percent of city residents were 55 or older, a number that grew to 26.9 percent according to a five-year projection in 2019.

Most of that growth happened in residents between 55 and 74 years old; the population of residents above 75 shrank over the 10-year period.
